100K ohm NTC 3950 Thermistor

The 3950 NTC Thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor and the special feature of these 100K ohm thermistors is that they exhibit a large change in resistance with only a small change in temperature. The thermistor is ideally used as a temperature sensor for 3D Printer Reprap. NTC is also known as the Negative Temperature Coefficient. These thermistors are widely used as inrush current limiters, temperature sensors, self-resetting overcurrent protectors, and self-regulating heating elements.

This Thermistor 100k NTC with 1 Meter Cable Temperature Sensor for 3D Printer Reprap. The thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor known for exhibiting a large change in resistance with only a small change in temperature.

It is important to note that a thermistor's change in resistance is non-linear. It follows a pre-defined curve which is provided by the thermistor manufacturer.

Positive thermal coefficient (PTC) will increase in resistance with an increase in temperature, and negative ones (NTC) will decrease. But the formula in practice is not linear, so sometimes an accurate table of measurements is better than the linear formula.

1. What is a 100K thermistor?

  • The 3950 NTC Thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor and the special feature of the 100K ohm thermistor is that they exhibit a large change in resistance with only a small temperature change. The thermistor is ideal for use as a temperature sensor in 3D printers such as the Reprap. Inrush current limiters, temperature sensors, self-resetting overcurrent protectors, and self-regulating heating elements are all common applications for these thermistors.

2. What is an NTC what is it used for?

  • NTC is an abbreviation for "Negative Temperature Coefficient." NTC thermistors are resistors with a negative temperature coefficient, which means that resistance decreases as temperature rises. They're mostly used as resistive temperature sensors and current limiters.

3. How does the resistance of a NTC thermistor vary with temperature?

  • The 3950 NTC Thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor, and the 100K ohm thermistor has the unique property of exhibiting a large change in resistance with only a small temperature change. When the temperature rises, the resistance of an NTC thermistor decreases. When the temperature drops, the resistance increases.

4. Why does the resistance of an NTC thermistor decrease with temperature?

  • As temperature rises, the resistance of NTC thermistors decreases, which is usually due to an increase in conduction electrons bumped up by thermal agitation from the valence band. An NTC is commonly used as a temperature sensor or as an inrush current limiter in series with a circuit.
