2.5mm Heat Shrink Tubing Black - 1  Meter

A heat shrink tube (or, heat shrink tubing) is a tube that shrinks in diameter when heated. After being heated with a heat gun, it shrinks to 50% of its original diameter. Heat shrink sleeve with a completely thermoplastic covered interior surface. When heated, the sleeve's diameter shrinks by 2:1 and the interior resin melts. The sleeve and the resin harden as they cool. This combination ensures resistance to pullout and perfect waterproofing for your connections, preventing a sleeve from slipping. In the case of a connector mounted on a cable (coaxial, for example), this sleeving ensures reinforcement at the point where the cable is generally subject to stress when the radius of the curve is small.

To protect the connection, the tubing is wrapped around it and heated with a lighter, matchstick, oven, hot air gun, or similar tool. A soldering iron (held close but not touching the tube) or the heat from a lighter are both convenient but ineffective methods for shrinking the tube. These processes cause the tubing to shrink to one-sixth of its original diameter (depending on the heat shrink, 2:1 is the most common), resulting in a tight fit over irregularly shaped joints. This provides good electrical insulation, dust, solvent, and other foreign material protection, and strain relief. Heat shrink tubing, like any other plastic, can melt, scorch, or catch fire if overheated.

1. What is a heat shrink tube used for?

  • Heat shrink tubing is a flexible plastic tube that is used to insulate wires, provide strain relief, and create environmental seals. It is also known as heat shrinkable tubing or heat shrink. It is constructed of a thermoplastic polymer, which shrinks when heated. Heat shrink tubing is used for a variety of purposes, including electrical and electronic work, automotive wiring, and industrial maintenance. To use heat shrink tubing, first slide it over the wire or component that needs to be protected. The tube is then heated with a heat source such as a heat gun or a lighter until it shrinks and conforms to the shape of the wire or component. Because of the heat, the polymer in the tube contracts, resulting in a tight, secure fit.

2. Can I use electrical tape instead of shrink tube?

  • Electrical tape is a type of insulating tape used to secure and protect electrical wires and components. It is made of a flexible, adhesive material that can be wrapped around wires and components to secure and insulate them. While electrical tape is useful for many electrical and wiring tasks, it is not a good substitute for heat shrink tubing. Heat shrink tubing is made of a special type of plastic that shrinks when heated, creating a tight, secure fit around wires and components. As a result, it is an efficient and dependable method of insulating and protecting electrical connections. Electrical tape, on the other hand, can become loose over time, especially if it is subjected to vibration or movement. It is also less durable than heat shrink tubing and may require replacement more frequently. Overall, while electrical tape can be used for some basic electrical and wiring tasks, it is not a good substitute for heat shrink tubing in applications that require a more secure and durable insulation.

3. Is heat shrink tube waterproof?

  • Yes, heat shrink tubing is commonly used to make connections waterproof. When you put it on correctly and heat it up, it seals tightly around the connection, stopping moisture and water from getting in.

4. Can heat shrink melt?

  • Yes, heat shrink tubing can melt if it exposed to high temperatures. It's made to shrink and seal tightly when heated, but too much heat can make it melt or change shape more than it should.

5. How long does heat shrink last?

  • Heat shrink tubing usually lasts between 1 to 5 years on the shelf, depending on what it's made of and how it's stored (usually between 18-35°C or 65-95°F). If it's stored right, it might even last up to 12 years, but this depends on the tubing shrinking to the smallest needed diameter.

6. How can I ensure I'm using the right size of heat shrink tubing?

  • To select heat shrink tubing for your project it's essential to accurately measure the diameter of the object you intend to cover. The buy heat shrink tubing that's a bit bigger than the thing you want to cover. This way, it can go over easily before you shrink it and fit snugly after you heat it up.
